What to Wear in Cape Town + Outfit Inspiration • The Blonde Abroad

Cape Town is, overall, a casual city. On any given day, you’ll find cafes and coffee shops full of people dressed in everything from business suits, to sundresses, to yoga pants, and that’s the norm. To be frank, Cape Town is just like any other modern city by the beach, so please don’t pack safari clothes to wear around town! 😉

With hot, summer months spanning November to February, and the winter months in South Africa usually rainy, Cape Town has somewhat distinct seasons. The summer months are dry and warm, and perfect for long beach days. The weather during the spring months, September and October, is mild and comfortable 75° F, but temperatures at night can drop below 50° F, so you’ll want to pack a jacket to stay warm.

After living here for over a year, I’ve learned to ALWAYS bring a jacket anywhere I go in the city, even in summer, because it can get windy at any moment—I’m serious, always carry a jacket with you!

My go-to summer outfit for a day around town is a comfy sundress or a t-shirt and shorts, sandals, and a denim jacket. During the winter, I’ll rock leggings and a sweater, and probably a messy bun!

We landed in Cape Town mid-January and hit the ground running.

Oliver and I packed up our life and moved abroad for a year — chasing a simple question: what’s the best that could happen?

My parents joined us for the first month — which meant extra hands, loving support, and the sweetest way to begin this chapter.

Between toddler sickness (IYKYK) and playing full-time tour guide, we somehow managed to squeeze in so much life.

A long weekend in Paternoster.
Glamping under the stars at Camp Canoe.
Summertime in the city.
Oliver starting at his new preschool.
Adventures through the Cape Winelands.
Slow weekends at the farmer’s market.
Afternoons stretched long at the beach.

It’s been messy and magical.
Exhausting and energizing.

Somewhere between pharmacy runs and beach swims, it started to feel less like a move…

A little late sharing this — but I needed time to sit with 2025. It was so much more than what made it to Instagram.

This was the year I stopped measuring life in miles traveled… and started measuring it in the days we weren’t promised.

Not in passport stamps.
Not in hotel check-ins.
Not in how far we could go.

But in the quiet relief of “clear.”
In small hands squeezing mine tighter.
In birthday candles and quiet camping mornings.
In laughter that came back after fear.

2025 was the plot twist year.

The year I learned strength doesn’t look like control —
it looks like surrender.
It looks like showing up anyway.
It looks like choosing joy even when you know how fragile it is.

And it looks like being surrounded by the people who love us most.

We traveled the world.
But more importantly —
we celebrated what we almost lost.

And at the end of it all?
We packed up our life and chose a new continent. 🇿🇦

2025, you were heavy.
You were also beautiful.
You changed me.

2026 — I’m ready.

Outfit suggestions for a trip in end of April/early May? We’ll be doing Cape Town, Cape Peninsula, Wine Country, Plettenberg Bay, Mossel Bay and Kruger (safari- although I kind of know what to wear there).

Everything in this post is pretty spot on for that time of year—it’ll be fairly warm so you can bring options (shorts, dresses, jumpsuits) and potentially a jean jacket or something in case a chill comes. hi i am travelling to south africa in a month’s time, late March to early April – capetown area, table mountains, robben island, peninsula cape, botanical garden and Safari [Kruger] . May i know what outfit to prepare? I am from a all year round tropical country so i have totally no clue.

Hey Jiayi! You’ll be entering the start of our winter and slightly rainy season, so I’d bring things you can easily layer. Some days might be a bit warmer, while others can get pretty chilly. So jackets and jeans, maybe a pair of shorts, some sweaters and flannels, a dress or two — things you can mix and match as the weather shifts!
