With more than thirty-eight million people, Tokyo is the largest city on the planet. While you could easily spend a lifetime exploring it, most of us only have a couple of weeks, so it’s important to have a strategy. That’s where my Tokyo neighborhood guide comes in handy!
To get your bearings in this crazy city, it’s good to know the basic geography of the metro. The city of Tokyo has twenty-three wards, and each ward is made up of several districts.
When planning your daily adventures in Tokyo, you’ll want to figure out which districts on the Tokyo map are most interesting and then plan out your route from there.

Shibuya District
Get ready to dive headfirst into the pulsating rhythm of one of the trendiest districts in Tokyo, Shibuya! Don’t miss the legendary Shibuya Crossing, a photographer’s dream! Explore trendy boutiques, charming cafes, and the hottest trends in Japanese street fashion. Shibuya isn’t just a district; it’s a fashionista’s paradise!

Shibuya Crossing
Shibuya Crossing is one of the busiest intersections in the world. During rush hour, you’ll find more than 1,000 people crossing this famous spot. When it comes to people watching, there is no better spot on earth.
Harajuku
Harajuku District is the center of Japanese fashion and youth culture. You’ll definitely want to spend an entire day exploring here. Start by checking out the endless boutiques and vintage shops on Takeshita Street.
If you’re looking to get some of that iconic Harajuku style while in Tokyo, I got an awesome manicure from Jill & Lovers. It’s a local fave and full of trendy designs that you won’t find anywhere else.
For a souvenir, you can hold onto forever, stop by one of the many Purikura photo booths. Get some old-school selfies, and then decorate them with absurd and cute designs. If you’re on a girl’s trip it’s a super fun activity not to miss!
To finish off the ultimate day in Harajuku, go for karaoke. Singing skills are totally optional—you’ve just got to get up there and do it!

Chiyoda District
Next, explore Tokyo’s chic Chiyoda district! It’s a fabulous mix of old and new from the Imperial Palace to the epicenter of okatu culture in Akihabara. Wander through the anime-filled streets, visit historical landmarks, and soak in the lively energy of the Chiyoda district.

Akihabara
Famous for its endless lines of electric stores, Akihabara is a tech lover’s heaven. The district is known as ‘electric town,’ and you can find anything and everything here. There are arcades and games galore alongside tons of anime and manga spots.
Another must-see is a maid café. The manga-style waitresses dress in traditional maids’ uniforms and call you master. There are a variety of different maid cafés, including some with guys waiting tables. You won’t find this anywhere else!
Imperial Palace
The Tokyo Imperial Palace, Kokyo, is the residence of the Japanese Head of State, also known as the Emperor of Japan. Walk around the beautiful grounds and take in the stunning architecture. Fun fact: the Imperial Palace was built where the original Edo Castle once stood!

Chuo District
Step into Tokyo’s vibrant core in the Chuo District! Explore the dynamic Tokyo areas, from the lively Tsukiji Outer Market to upscale Ginza, and experience the seamless fusion of high-end luxury and budget-friendly bliss.

Minato District
From the iconic Tokyo Tower to the vibrant Roppongi, the Minato Tokyo region is all about enjoying the finer things in life. Indulge in upscale shopping, dine with a view, and dive into some top nightlife – Minato is one of the Tokyo districts not to miss!

Roppongi
Roppongi is where it’s at for trendy cafes, chic boutiques, and some of the coolest art galleries in town. By day, explore the Mori Art Museum for a dose of contemporary culture, then head to Roppongi Hills for stunning city views from the observation deck. Shiba-koen
Home to the Tokyo Tower, this area is incredibly popular with tourists. You can easily spend a whole day exploring here. Spend the afternoon shopping, going for a world-class dinner, and having at least a sake or two.
Odaiba
Tokyo’s newest district, Odaiba, has the futuristic architecture you’d expect of Japan. This man-made island started developing in the late 1990s and has become a tourist fave.
Shinjuku District
Step into the vibrant energy of Tokyo’s Shinjuku district! Home to the lively Kabukicho entertainment district, the iconic Golden Gai with its eclectic mix of bars and restaurants, and some of Tokyo’s best nightlife. Get ready to explore one of the liveliest parts of Tokyo!

Golden Gai
Golden Gai is a cool hangout with over 200 bars crammed into six ultra-narrow streets. Every bar has a unique theme and atmosphere. You’ll find a blend of businessmen, celebrities, tourists, and everyone looking for a fun night out.
Kabukicho entertainment district
Whether you’re catching a live show, enjoying some arcade fun, sipping drinks at the themed bars, or experiencing the vibrant nightlife, Kabukicho is the perfect place for an unforgettable night in Tokyo. Don’t miss visiting the Kabukicho Entertainment Tower, which houses a cinema, live concert venue, gaming arcade, and a yokocho food hall.
Robot Restaurant
The popular Robot Restaurant closed in March 2020 and has since delayed its May 2023 comeback. But don’t worry; I’ll keep this post updated with the latest news!
In the meantime, meet the fresh alternative – Samurai Restaurant, which opened in October 2023 by the same creators in Kabukicho. It’s dinner and a show to remember!

Tokyo’s Taito District is one of the more traditional areas of the city to explore. Roam through the historic vibes of Asakusa, where Senso-ji Temple and Nakamise-dori’s bustling shops steal the show.

At the heart of the Taito District is Asakusa, with its impressive Senso-ji Temple. This beautiful seventh-century traditional temple is Tokyo’s most famous.
Asakusa has a fascinating history. If you plan to do any walking tours, this is the place to do it. With kabuki theaters and red-light districts, you can spend hours wandering around and taking it all in.
